Tenholder’s discus title leads Adrian at state meet
JEFFERSON CITY — The old adage of “you only need one good throw” fit Adrian junior Hank Tenholder’s state meet last weekend.
Archie junior Mollie Andrews broke the school record in the pole vault last weekend at the Class 2 sectional meet. She cleared 11 feet, 11 inches and won the event.
Three school records fall at Class 1, 2 sectional meets
On Saturday, three school records were broken and a couple dozen athletes qualified for the Class 1 and 2 state track and field meets.
Adrian boys win WEMO track and field title
ADRIAN — The Blackhawks track and field team ran away with the WEMO Conference meet Monday, morning than doubling the second-place team.
Dakota Essenpries, a 2023 Adrian graduate, begins her approach for the vault at a meet this season. Essenpries, a freshman at the University of Arkansas, and her team will be competing at the NCAA Championships on Thursday. The event will be televised on ESPN2.
Adrian graduate headed to NCAA Gymnastics Championships
Dakota Essenpries is loving her first year as a college gymnast, and she’s about to compete at the highest level this week. The 2023 Adrian graduate will be with her University of Arkansas team when it competes Thursday at the NCAA Championships semifinal session in Fort Worth, Texas.
Midway freshman Moriah Perrenoud-Moore wins the 400-meter dash in a time of 1 minute and 2.84 seconds. Perrenoud-Moore has a been a dominant force in the 400 dash during the first month of the season.
Lady Vikings freshmen, Adrian boys shine at Midway Invitational
While the Adrian boys track and field team had a strong performance at the Midway Invitational last week, the Midway girls squad may have itself one of the best quarter-milers in the state.

Harrisonville’s Kayleigh Norris runs down the home stretch with a big lead during the 1,600-meter run at the 2023 state track and field meet. Norris won the race, earning her first state title. She also placed second in the 800- and 3,200-meter runs at state. She’s back for her junior season, fresh off a state championship in cross country last fall.

With the spring sports season just around the corner, it’s time look at the track and field athletes from the area and who has a chance to turn some heads and make a splash on the state stage in May.

Last week, the Adrian sophomore stood atop the Class 1 state podium after making school history. She became Adrian’s first female state medalist and state champion when she won the 235-pound title in Columbia.

Area boys wrestlers lock up state tourney spots
On Saturday, nearly two dozen area competitors sealed their own berths into this week’s state tournament that began this morning at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Harrisonville freshman Taylor Kanoy celebrates her win over El Dorado Springs’ Lillian Corbin in the “blood round” consolation semifinals Saturday. Kanoy’s pin in 51 seconds clinched her state berth. Kanoy finished fourth in the 170-pound bracket at the Class 1 District 3 tournament in Nevada.
Nine girls qualify for Class 1 state wrestling tournament
NEVADA — Of the nine area girls wrestlers who qualified for next week’s state tournament, six of them will be making their first trip to compete against the best Class 1 competitors in Missouri.
The Adrian girls wrestling team won the Greater Missouri Conference championship Saturday. The tournament was hosted at Adrian High School. Increased interest and participation this year helped the Lady Blackhawks win the championship. The Adrian boys finished fifth with a smaller squad than usual.

ADRIAN — An increase in numbers helped the Adrian girls wrestling team win a conference title Saturday, while the boys team won a pair of individual titles as it competed at less than full strength.
