A rainstorm packing winds in excess of 60 miles per hour blew through Harrisonville early this afternoon, knocking out power to about 75 percent of the city and causing traffic snarls with trees and limbs covering streets throughout the city.

City Clerk Daniel Barnett said over a dozen trees were uprooted in city park along with other damage causing the city to cancel the annual fireworks show scheduled for tonight.

He said it would take at least a week to clear the damage so when a possible date for the show is unknown.

Power crews from the city have been working to restore power as have crews from Evergy in the rural areas. It is unknown when power will be restored.

Crews report fireworks being shot are creating some confusion as the sound is similar to transformers blowing. There are reports that trucks on I-49 we blown over during the storm.

Peculiar has also canceled its July 4th events. At last report festivities in Drexel and Pleasant Hill are still being held.
