Supreme Court rules commission candidate ineligible

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Monday that Herschel Young is not eligible to run for Associate County Commissioner in Cass County.

In a 6-1 ruling, the court said, “The circuit court determined Young is not a qualified candidate for elective office and ineligible to be on the primary ballot under Missouri law because he previously pleaded guilty to a felony, notwithstanding, a gubernatorial pardon of Young’ felony conviction. Finding no error, this court affirms.”

County Clerk Jeff Fletcher said Monday afternoon that he was informed of the decision and he is ordering ballots for the Aug. 6 primary to be printed. With Young removed, there are four candidates for District 1 (South) Commissioner: Mark Guffey, Steve Tallman, Mike Moreland and Chris Pinkepank.
