Martha R. Thrutchley

January 18, 1929 – January 26, 2024

Martha Rae Thrutchley was born January 18, 1929, and passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024. On her passing, she was donated to the Gift Body Program, in care of Kansas City University.

Martha was adopted by her parents, Lorence and Sarah Brewer and grew up in the Independence area, graduating from William Chrisman and attending Graceland College.

She married Billie B. Harper and, in that marriage, had 3 daughters: Lora, Cindy and Reba.

Martha’s second marriage was to Dougald G. Thrutchley, December 18, 1970.

Martha worked a variety of jobs: Substitute teacher for Raytown primary schools, S & H Green Stamps, YMCA, Parkview Gem, Barry Jennings Insurance, John Knox and she sold Avon, Holiday Magic, and Mary Kay.

While attending the Raytown Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) she was woman’s leader and worked with the girl’s program of Skylarks and Orioles.

Doug and Martha owned a fruit orchard in Kingsville. In selling the orchard, they bought a lake property at Pomme de Terre where the family would gather through the summer to enjoy skiing, riding the torpedo and just plain laying out.

There were at least three favorite things that Martha loved: water (being in it, around it) chocolate and the color orange and most of all she loved her family.

But the desert would be calling them, so they sold their property at the lake and headed to Yuma, Arizona. There she volunteered at the Yuma Regional Medical Center. As time went on, they decided to move back to the Midwest and landed in Pleasant Hill.  There she was involved with Community of Christ in Pleasant Hill, serving as secretary for the congregation. She also served at the Colbern Road Community of Christ helping with VBS, Breakfast with Santa and wherever she was needed. Since July 2023 she resided at Pleasant Hill Health & Rehab.

Martha joins her father, Lorence Brewer; her brother Jimmie Brewer, Gerald Logeman; and her mother, Sarah Logeman (Brewer), Bruce Logeman, and Linda Davis.  She leaves her husband Doug; her daughters Lora (Cliff) Borgstadt, Pleasant Hill, Cindy (Mike) Crotty, Moline IL, and Reba Robertson, Pleasant Hill.  She leaves five grandchildren, Clint (Jennifer) Borgstadt, Lee’s Summit, Lindsey Clinton, Titusville, PA, Eric (Kim) Davis, Bettendorf IA, Erin (Patrick) Davis-Tevenan, Glenwood Springs, CO, and Von Robertson, Pleasant Hill; and five great grandchildren, Hannah, Levi and Landon Borgstadt, Evan and Olivia Clinton, and Bennett and Beckham Davis. She also leaves behind stepchildren, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Visitation will be February 17, 2024, at the Community of Christ church on Colbern Road in Lees Summit, MO., at 1:30 pm with service beginning at 2:00 pm. A zoom link will be available for the service.
