A 29-year-old man, previously of Independence, was arrested Friday night following a pursuit with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Unit.

Just after 10 p.m. Friday, a Cass County deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for multiple traffic violations in the area of SW Outer Road and Pine Street in Archie. The driver failed to yield to the deputy and a pursuit ensued northbound on I-49 at a high rate of speed.

This chase was not connected to the fatal accident on I-49 in Harrisonville which occurred around the same time Friday. The Harrisonville Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol handled that accident.

The suspect, identified as Michael Cox, allegedly crashed his vehicle in a field near SE Outer Road and 283rd Street south of Harrisonville. He fled on foot, but was found, with the assistance of a K9 unit, near the 283rd Street overpass and placed into custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office report.

Cox has been charged with Aggravated Fleeing a Stop or Detention (D Felony), Operation A Motor Vehicle in a Careless and Imprudent Manner (A Misdemeanor) and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (D Misdemeanor). He’s currently at the Cass County Jail with a $50,000 cash-only bond.
