City of Harrisonville plans late night power outage

The city of Harrisonville will be conducting a planned electrical outage Thursday night to make repairs to the north substation.

The planned outage will take place at 11 p.m. Thursday and is scheduled to last about two hours.

The city said the hope is that doing the work late at night will cause as little disruption as possible in the community’s daily routine. While the weather has been cold in the recent weeks, staff have made sure to schedule the outage for the warmest night of the week, as temperatures should stay in the upper-to-mid 30s during the time of the outage.

The city explained why the planned outage is necessary.

During inspections of the substation, it was noticed that the arresters (surge protection) and grounding strap for the substation’s main transformer needed to be replaced.

These pieces protect the transformer from becoming overloaded, which would cause the entire substation to lose power.

This will affect a large portion of the community, and the city understands that some will not be happy with the timing.

The city also warned residents to know that this work is essential to maintaining an efficient and effective power grid and hopefully limits the potential for a large-scale outage hitting the north side of town.

This is the second power outage the city of Harrisonville has planned in the past two months. The other was on Nov. 25.
