Belton student arrested for bringing firearm into school

BELTON – On Tuesday, a school resource officer received information regarding a student bringing a firearm into the Scott Educational Center for night classes. Wednesday, the suspect was arrested and put into custody.

The Belton Police Department RSO team stopped the student before he was able to enter the school at 4 p.m. and he was detained for further investigation. The investigation revealed a loaded .45-caliber pistol in the student’s backpack loaded with nine bullets, according to the probable cause statement.

The student was arrested and placed on a 24-hour investigative hold, then on Wednesday he was charged and arrested. The student has been identified as Cameron Kopfer of Belton and was charged with a class E felony of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a cash bond of $10,000.

Earlier today, the arraignment was held and Kopfer entered a plea of not guilty. The case will continue on at 9 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Cass County Justice Center.
