2024 sports year in review: Individual titles highlight past year
Like almost every year, the past 12 months have been filled with many great accomplishments and stories that captivated fans and audiences of our area high schools.

At the 48-team Battle at the Katy Trail Tournament, Sherwood finished 15th while Adrian placed 41st over the weekend.
The Adrian senior class of 2025 has been  key contributors to the football team for their entire high school careers. Two years ago, they helped the Blackhawks reach the Class 1 state title game, but they lost to East Buchanan, 42-0. The seniors wanted to redeem that loss this year and bring home the program’s second state championship. They did just that Saturday evening in Columbia, beating Penney (Hamilton) 34-13. This year’s seniors took a photo with coach Matt Davis after the game. COLUMBIA — This year’s senior class of Adrian football players had one goal in mind when it began this season: to complete an act of atoning for guilt, a fault or a mistake.

Blackhawks win program’s second state title
COLUMBIA — Colton Miller’s final touchdown in an Adrian uniform was one that will be shown on highlight reels for many years to come. It was the final touchdown of the Adrian football season, and it put an exclamation point on the Blackhawks’ first state title in more than two decades.

ADRIAN — Two years ago, the Blackhawks had a chance to make history and become the second-ever team in program history to win a state championship.

ADRIAN — When members of the Blackhawk football team took a look outside before taking the field Saturday afternoon, they saw a winter wonderland. “The weather doesn’t affect us,” Adrian senior Andrew Kendrick said. “We felt like we were at Lambeau (Field). We loved it. Everyone was happy about it.”
Adrian will be competing for the Class 1 state championship at 3 p.m. Satuday at Faurot Field in Columbia.

Two schools located just seven miles apart have a chance to bring home a pair of state title this weekend. Both Adrian and Archie will be competing for their respective state football championships Saturday afternoon.

For the second time in three years, the Adrian football team will host a state semifinal game on its own field as it looks to make another run to the Class 1 championship game.

The Archie football team won its third-straight district title Friday night. The Whirlwinds beat Appleton City, 52-30, advancing to the state quarterfinals.

Jenna Shipley, a 2020 Adrian High School graduate, celebrates winning the MIAA Conference Basketball Tournament on March 10. Shipley was a redshirt junior this year at Pitt State, but she opted to end her college athletic career due to a heel injury she suffered during the season. She played through the injury to finish the season before graduating with her bachelor’s degree. Shipley will be attending the University of Central Missouri this fall, working on her master’s degree.

Adrian junior Hank Tenholder won the Class 2 discus Friday at the MSHSAA state track and field meet. Tenholder’s winning throw was 163 feet, 5 inches.

Archie junior Mollie Andrews broke the school record in the pole vault last weekend at the Class 2 sectional meet. She cleared 11 feet, 11 inches and won the event.

ADRIAN — The Blackhawks track and field team ran away with the WEMO Conference meet Monday, morning than doubling the second-place team.
Dakota Essenpries, a 2023 Adrian graduate, begins her approach for the vault at a meet this season. Essenpries, a freshman at the University of Arkansas, and her team will be competing at the NCAA Championships on Thursday. The event will be televised on ESPN2.

Dakota Essenpries is loving her first year as a college gymnast, and she’s about to compete at the highest level this week. The 2023 Adrian graduate will be with her University of Arkansas team when it competes Thursday at the NCAA Championships semifinal session in Fort Worth, Texas.
Midway freshman Moriah Perrenoud-Moore wins the 400-meter dash in a time of 1 minute and 2.84 seconds. Perrenoud-Moore has a been a dominant force in the 400 dash during the first month of the season.
Lady Vikings freshmen, Adrian boys shine at Midway Invitational
While the Adrian boys track and field team had a strong performance at the Midway Invitational last week, the Midway girls squad may have itself one of the best quarter-milers in the state.

Harrisonville’s Kayleigh Norris runs down the home stretch with a big lead during the 1,600-meter run at the 2023 state track and field meet. Norris won the race, earning her first state title. She also placed second in the 800- and 3,200-meter runs at state. She’s back for her junior season, fresh off a state championship in cross country last fall.

NEVADA — Of the nine area girls wrestlers who qualified for next week’s state tournament, six of them will be making their first trip to compete against the best Class 1 competitors in Missouri.
The Adrian girls wrestling team won the Greater Missouri Conference championship Saturday. The tournament was hosted at Adrian High School. Increased interest and participation this year helped the Lady Blackhawks win the championship. The Adrian boys finished fifth with a smaller squad than usual.
