Esther M. Allen

Esther Marie Allen, 73, Harrisonville, died Dec. 29 at Redwood of Blue River, Kansas City. Esther was born Dec. 29, 1948, in Harrisonville, one of a set triplets born to Alvard and Ruth Allyne (Gravette) Allen.
She was a 1966 graduate of Harrisonville High School.
Esther had lived in Harrisonville most of her life, living in Oklahoma for seven years. She had worked for Hope Haven in Harrisonville. Esther was a member of The Worship Center and attended the Berea Church of God in Christ.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dallas, Edwin and Roland Allen; and a daughter, Anastasia “Stacy” Allen-Madison.
She is survived by a son, Darcy Allen, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, Edward Allen, Raymore, and Arthur Allen, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Burma Allen, North Kansas City, and Dorothy Shackelford, Newark, Ohio; a granddaughter, Megan Webster; and two great-granddaughters, Arianna Allen and Ophelia Webster.
Memorial services were Jan. 4 at The Worship Center, Harrisonville.

Jeffrey C. Cummins
Dec. 17, 1963 – Jan. 3, 2022
Jeffrey Corbett “Corby” Cummins, Harrisonville, was born Dec. 17, 1963, in Independence, the son of James Corbett and Janet Charlene (Boyland) Cummins.
He died Jan. 3 at the Research Medical Center, Kansas City, at the age of 58 years and 17 days.
Corby was employed as a machinist supervisor for Midwest Plastics, Lee’s Summit. He was a “Good Ol’ Boy” who loved his family, especially his grandchildren and hated when the Kansas City Chiefs lost.
Corby was known as a giver and not a taker. He was willing to help anyone he could.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Chris Cummins.
Corby is survived by a son, Josh Cummins and wife, Summer Doles, and a daughter, Casie Ford and husband, Alex, all of Harrisonville; eight grandchildren with one on the way; a brother, Chad Cummins, Lexington; two sisters, Kathy Armstrong, state of Florida, and Kim Tarwater and husband, Randy, Harrisonville; other relatives and many friends.
Cremation. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Colleen F. Davis
Nov. 20, 1920 – Dec. 30, 2021
Colleen Francis Davis was born the daughter of Jesse Albert and Wilda Adams Francis Nov. 20, 1920, in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
She moved with her family from Sapulpa, Oklahoma, to Harrisonville in April 1926.
She finished 12 years of school there, graduating from Harrisonville High School with the class of 1938.
Colleen earned a BS in Education Degree from CMU Warrensburg, majoring in primary education and speech correction. She earned a Master of Education Degree from Missouri University of Columbia with a major in supervision.
She did additional study at KC Junior College, KC University, Sophia University in Tokyo, Kansas University with classes on the Medical Center Campus in Kansas City, Kansas, with a stint of teaching physically handicapped first graders at the Capper Foundation in Topeka, Kansas.
Colleen taught a total of 31 years in seven different schools: Hickory Grove, Cass County Rural District No. 85; Chilhowee Consolidated; Harrisonville Elementary; Kansas City Leeds, Milton Moore, Pitcher; Dependent Schools in Japan, Yoyogi School in Tokyo, Funaoka School, Camp Drake; Jefferson Elementary, Casper, Wyoming; Carter County Schools, Elsinor, and Van Buren.
Colleen married Oral O. Davis, Lt. Col. USA-Ret., who was superintendent of all dependent schools in the far East Command while she was a teacher there.
They shared a number of homes in various places for 13 years, meanwhile traveling the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While living in Mesa, Arizona, she was a volunteer in the Telephone Counseling Program of Grace Community Church of the Valley; assisted with wedding receptions at the church and drove many seniors to their appointments.
Colleen had been a life member of NEA; life member of MSTA; member of OES, Humboldt, Nebraska; former member of BPW, Harrisonville; She was a member of Harrisonville First Baptist Church from the age of 9 then later moved her membership to Antioch Southern Baptist Church, Harrisonville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John J. Francis; sisters, Irmah Francis Wolf, and Pauline Francis Risner; and her husband, Oral O. Davis.
She is survived by two nephews and their families Donald D. Wolf, Palm Springs, California, and Robert A. Wolf, Peoria, Arizona.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was Jan. 12 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with inurnment in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, immediately following the service.

Sharon K. Heenan
Sept. 21, 1944 – Jan. 3, 2022
Sharon Kay Barnes Heenan died Jan. 3 with her family by her side. Sharon was born Sept. 21, 1944, in San Francisco, California, the daughter of Herbert Wardell and Nona Mae Barnes.
She was raised and graduated in Mountain Home, Arkansas. She married Jerry Michael Heenan from Mountain Home, Arkansas, prior to moving to Kansas City in 1964.
Sharon retired from the Department of Agriculture as a financial specialist. She was a member of the Belton Church of Christ, Drexel Lions Club and was active in prison ministry writing.
Sharon loved to crochet, sew, ribbon embroidery and bake sweets. Her greatest love and joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Herbert Wardell; mother, Nona Mae Barnes; and her sister, Carolyn Sue Botnik.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kayla Machel Johns and Sandy and Tanya Shawn Gammon, all of, Drexel; a brother, John Barnes, Plano, Texas; granddaughter, Samantha Gammon and Tim Galperin, Overland Park, Kansas; granddaughter, Callie LaBeth and Dusty Labeth, Drexel; granddaughter, Sara Gammon, attending school in London; grandson, Dru Johns and Daniela Johns, Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughter, Audrey Harris and JR Harris, Carrolton, Georgia; grandson, Mikael Rose and Dee Dee Forbes, Kearney; granddaughter, Shea Page and Booker Page, Drexel; and a treasured friend, Jerry Heenan; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were Jan. 8 at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel.

Linda J. Huston
Nov. 8, 1946 – Jan. 2, 2022
Linda Joyce Huston, 75, Peculiar, died Jan. 2 at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City.
She is survived by four children, Wayne Edward Pettis and wife, Lena, Appleton, Wisconsin, Lyn Oshel and husband, Jay, Saint Joseph, Margery Jacobs, Higginsville, Mark Polson and wife, Christi, Peculiar; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson on the way; two sisters, Thelma Jean Smith, Peculiar, and Janet Ellis, Gary, Texas; other relatives and many friends.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was Jan.7 at the Bible Fellowship Center, Independence, with inurnment in the Rochester Cemetery, Rochester, at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Kathy A. Nunn
July 28, 1948 – Dec. 31, 2021
Kathy Ann Nunn, 73, Harrisonville, died Dec. 31 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville. Kathy was born July 28, 1948, in Kansas City, the daughter of Glen Edward and Ella Verina (Ogan) Woodard.
Kathy lived in Kansas City and was a 1966 graduate of Center High School. She went on to get her Associates Degree in Nursing and was a registered nurse for 25 years before her retirement in 2020.
Kathy married Carl Lee Nunn Oct. 3, 1967, in Harrisonville. They were married for 31 years and were remarried Oct. 8, 2006, in Belton.
Kathy had lived in Freeman and Peculiar before moving to Harrisonville in 1984.
Kathy worked as an R.N. at ABC Health Care for 25 years and also worked at Research Psychiatric Center and at Cass Regional Medical Center. She specialized in caring for the mentally challenged and geriatric patients. She gave lovingly to others all the days of her life.
Kathy was very active in her church, The Rock Brook Church in Belton, and was a member of the choir, door greeters, the prayer team, Heart-n-Hand Christmas Project and helped start a Christian book club. She also took a mission trip to the Philippines.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her mother; and a brother, Larry Woodard.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Doyle Guy Thurman, Harrisonville; a son, Jesse Lee Nunn, Oak Grove; three daughters, Anita Marie Kepner and Montigue Earl Owsley, Urich, Rita Jo Carter, Belton, and Rachel Thurman; her father, Glen Edward Woodard and Earlene, Liberty; and nine grandchildren, Tearstin Shiann Ogle, Carl John Carter, Jacob Sterling Kepner, Keayn Thurman, Emery Thurman, Calea Thurman, Liljah Earl Owsley, Max Earl Owsley and Destiny Nicole Owsley.
Funeral services were Jan. 4 at Rock Brook Church, Belton. Burial followed in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to Rock Brook Church, Belton. Kathy had requested for all to provide a random act of kindness to someone in need.

Merle E. Allen, Jr.
Dec. 16, 1947 – Jan. 2, 2022
Merle “Ed” Edwin Allen, Jr., 74, Lynn Valley Lakes, formerly of Adrian, died Jan. 2 at Louisburg Healthcare and Rehab in Louisburg. Merle “Ed” Allen, Jr., was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Norton, Kansas, the son of Merle Allen, Sr., and Josephine Campbell.
He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1965. Following graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam.
“Fast Eddie” was an independent truck driver who worked hard, but also enjoyed having a good time. Later in life, Ed underwent a liver transplant, surviving a record of 17 years afterward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Josephine Allen.
Ed is survived by his sister, Wilma Allen; nephew Joseph Allen, two daughters and their families.
A visitation was Jan. 8 at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel. A graveside service, with military honors, followed in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel.

Earl H. Anderson
July 28, 1932 – Jan. 4, 2022
Earl Harvey Anderson, 89, Butler, died Jan. 4 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born July 28, 1932, the son of Leslie and Hazel Sircin Anderson in Barnes, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bessie Rose Anderson and Roberta Radford; and a great-grandson, Maysn Lile.
Earl is survived by his wife, Neoma Anderson, Butler; a son, Neil Anderson and wife, Sabrina, Springfield; a daughter, Virginia Thompson and husband, Mike, Butler; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors were Jan. 8 at Fairview Cemetery, Butler.
Contributions are suggested to the Community Food Pantry of Butler.

Johnny E. Fassler

Johnny “John” Everett Fassler, 88, Butler, died Dec. 31 at Pleasant Hill Health and Rehab, Pleasant Hill. He was born April 2, 1933, the son of Matthew Augustine “August” and Leona Durilda Zinn in Butler.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Barbara Fassler, Butler; son, John and Melanie, Sweet Home, Oregon; four daughters, Charlene Roxanne, of the home, Cindy and David Creasy, of Lee’s Summit, Donna and James Oswald, Golden City, and Susan and Mike Black, Lone Jack; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; stepsons and stepdaughters; and a multitude of friends and other family.
Funeral services were Jan. 7 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, with military honors. Contributions are suggested to the Butler First Baptist Church or Grace Blankets.

Doris A. Lefevre
Jan. 20, 1941 – Jan. 6, 2022
Doris Ann Lefevre, 80, Butler, died Jan. 6 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. She was born Jan. 20, 1941, the daughter of Orville Chris and Viola Ruth Enos Doll in Harrisonville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dale Doll.
Doris is survived by her husband, Sam Lefevre, Butler; two sons, Randy Lefevre of Bronaugh, and Mike Lefevre and wife, Johnna, of Butler; a daughter, Cheryl Baker and husband, Gary, Odessa; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were Jan. 12 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.
Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Bates County Fair.

Wilmer D. McGuire
May 17, 1938 – Jan. 2, 2022
Wilmer Dean McGuire, 83, Butler, died Jan. 2 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. He was born May 17, 1938, the son of Wilmer “Jack” and Wilma Nadine “Curly” Burch McGuire in Butler.
Dean, one of four children, grew up in rural Butler and attended one-room schoolhouses until moving into Butler in the eighth grade. He graduated from Butler High School in 1957, the first one in his family to graduate from high school.
On Jan. 14, 1962, he married Diana Schapeler and to this union a son and a daughter were born.
Dean was a truck driver. He started his driving career in 1957 being the first driver for Jim Tiona. He went on to drive for several different companies retiring from Burton Trucking in 2011, he then worked for Larry and Bryan Seider until 2021.
He was an active member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.
Dean, a family man, was dependable, honest, trustworthy, caring and loving.
He thoroughly enjoyed teasing and joking with the kids. His kids and grandchildren were his hobby and he rarely missed a sporting event.
He was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years and helping his dad on the farm. If anyone needed anything, Dean was only a call away and he took care of others’ equipment like it was his own.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larry McGuire; and two sisters, Judy Ingram and Kay Nisely.
Dean is survived by his wife of 59 years, Diana McGuire, Butler; a son, Lyle McGuire, Butler; a daughter, Deanie Mooney and husband, Kenny, Adrian; three brothers-in-law, Larry Ingram, Butler, Dean Schapeler and wife, Sue, Winter Haven, Florida, and Don Schapeler and wife, Licia, Liberty; an aunt, Marjorie Popplewell, Butler; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Leean and Justin Hannah and their children, Kennisen, Ashlynn and Bronson Dean; Meghan and Dustin Robbins and their children, Libbi and Beigh; Cody and Julienne McGuire and their children, Brayden and Garren; Dakota Mooney and Shelbie and their son, Sidney; Courtney McGuire; and Tanner McGuire and Ashley.
Funeral services were Jan. 7 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Dean was very proud of the fact that he was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He made it a priority to instill the value of education in his entire family. Investing in education and athletics in his memory is a legacy that his family would like to continue for the generations to come. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Dean McGuire Scholarship Fund are suggested.

Patricia N. Rogers

Patricia Nadine Rogers, 73, Kansas City, Kansas, died Dec. 27 at Butler Center in Butler. She was born July 2, 1948, the daughter of Keith George and Nadine Vesta McGuire Rogers in Butler.
Patricia is survived by a brother, Joe Rogers, Kansas City, Kansas.
There are no public services scheduled at this time. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Harrisonville.
Contributions in her memory may be left at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel for funeral expenses.

Carol Sue “Nan” Stevens, 76, Butler, died Jan. 5 at the Butler Center in Butler. She was born Dec. 17, 1945, the daughter of Harold Walter and Eula Jeanette Newman Grimberg in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and a son, Chad Cushard.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Shari Diane Essenpries and husband, Dick, Adrian; three grandchildren, Matthew Newkirk and wife Hannah, Ashley Stephens and husband Gerold and Jacob Essenpries; three step-grandchildren, Toby Essenpries and wife Bethany, Nick Essenpries and Colby Essenpries and wife Miranda; five great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Jimmie R. Vickers

Jimmie Robert Vickers, 85, Clinton, died Jan. 6 at Research Medical in Kansas City. Jimmie Robert Vickers was born March 6, 1936, in Clinton, the son of Justin and Jeanette Vickers.
Jimmie graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. Jimmie worked as a shift foreman at the Montrose KCPL Power Plant and retired after 30 plus years.
He loved his cat “Lucy.” Jimmie also loved to fish and especially eating fish and was an avid bowhunter. He loved to mow his yard and to dance to country music.
He was a member of Northeast Baptist Church.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Justin and Jeanette Vickers; his grandson, Aiden Wayne Fuggitt; his granddaughter, Danni Vickers; and daughter-in-law, Ashley Hoskins.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Vickers, of the home; five children, Justin Curtis and Kimberly Vickers, Oak Grove, Jennifer Lynne Strouse, Kansas City, Kansas, Jacquetta and Doug Vickers-Siegel, Warrensburg, Kason Keith and Qili Vickers, Kansas City, Jerome Kent and Julie Vickers, Carrolton, Illinois; two sisters; Joyce Crotchette, Brandon, Mississippi, and Janice Doll, Peculiar; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services were Jan. 11 at Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton. Burial followed in Fields Creek Cemetery, Clinton.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or The Wounded Warriors Foundation and can be left in care of the funeral home.

Kay Ward

Kay Ward, 85, Butler, died Jan. 1 at Medicalodge of Butler. She was born Oct. 28, 1936, the daughter of Albert Groseclose and Ella Schiffmann Welston in Buckner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marlene Welston; and a son, David Ward.
Kay is survived by her three sons, Gregory Ward and wife, Tara, Butler, Jeffery Ward and wife, Robin, Amoret, and Mike Ward, Butler; two brothers, Wylie Welston and wife, Mary, and Larry “Spud” Welston, all of Butler; a sister, Jean Shannon, Cleveland; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Jan. 5 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial was in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam. Contributions are suggested to the Heartland Hospice.
