High-speed pursuit ends near Garden City with arrest

Christopher L. Cooper, 38, of Holden is currently being held in the Cass County Jail with no bond on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest by fleeing.

Around 8 a.m. Friday, a deputy assigned to the Cass County Traffic Unit attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on a speeding motorist in a maroon Chevy Silverado near the area of I-49 and 2 Highway.

The driver sped from the deputy and exited at 7 Highway heading south toward Garden City. In the area of 7 Highway and Kircher Road, assisting deputies deployed a tire deflation device.

The suspect’s vehicle struck the stop stick resulting in deflating one tire. The driver continued to flee while driving on the front tire rim at a high rate of speed. A deputy attempted to grapple the vehicle but was unsuccessful.

The vehicle exited 7 Highway at Garden City and drove through the intersection and lost control of his vehicle striking a patrol car and a truck driven by a civilian. There were no reported injuries.

The suspect, a 38-year-old male from Holden, was found to be a convicted felon who was in possession of a firearm, and what deputies believe to be methamphetamine.

The driver is being held in the Cass County Jail pending formal charges.
