Nancy L. Linthicum
Sept. 23, 1943 – April 10, 2022
Nancy Lou Linthicum, 78, Grain Valley, formerly of Harrisonville, died April 10 surrounded by the love of family and friends, at Centerpoint Medical Center, Independence. Nancy was born Sept. 23, 1943, the daughter of J.D. Jones and Lucille (Dorton) Jones in Chicago, Illinois.
She grew up and spent most of her life in Harrisonville, having graduated from Harrisonville High School with the class of 1961.
After high school, Nancy attended the University of Missouri. She worked at Yellow Freight for 25 years where she developed lifelong friendships.
After retirement, Nancy went to work for Cason Law Firm for 10 years.
Nancy spent her spare time giving back to her community, doing so by being a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She served as an alderman for seven years. She also worked as a liaison and member of the Historic Preservation Commission for 23 years.
Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren, the reason she made the decision to move to Grain Valley was to be closer to them.
She embarked immediately on embracing the community and giving back by becoming a volunteer at St. Mary’s Medical Center, as well as becoming a member of the Church of Resurrection where she served as member of the Altar Guild, hospitality and the Order of the Daughters of the King.
Nancy’s sense of wit and humor made her loved by all in her new community.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Linda Jones; a son, Curtis Linthicum; and a brother-in-law, Tom Moore.
She is survived by one son, Jason and Kressy Linthicum, Grain Valley; a daughter, Paula and Nathan Carpenter, Lone Jack; a sister, Jan Moore, Lee’s Summit; a brother, Thad and Pam Jones, Archie; four grandchildren, Alex Linthicum, Devin Linthicum, Holden Carpenter and Drew Linthicum; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
Memorial services were April 16 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church or Hope Haven.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.
Luke Scavuzzo
Jan. 11, 1928 – April 12, 2022
Luke Scavuzzo, 94, Harrisonville, died April 12 with loving family at his side. Luke was most proud of two things, his family and his community.
He married Gwendolyn “Sissy” Hendryx Aug. 15, 1948. They never turned down an opportunity to dance. He treasured traveling with his family and would do nearly anything to make them laugh.
Luke valued serving his country and his community. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948. After graduating from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, he owned and operated Scavuzzo’s Grocery with his four brothers, Cosmo, Tony, Salvatore and Joe.
It was originally opened by Luke’s father, Santo “Charlie” and uncle, Sam. The grocery store was a fixture in the community for 77 years.
Luke also had two sisters, Ida and Faustina. All of his siblings preceded him in death.
Luke was a member of the Kiwanis Club, served on city council, was a volunteer fireman for the Harrisonville Volunteer Fire Department and was the first assistant football coach for the Harrisonville High School football program.
As a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Harrisonville, Luke was a charter member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Knights of Columbus. He was also inducted into the Missouri Valley Football Hall of Fame and the Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Harrisonville Football Hall of Fame and was a Harrisonville Wall of Fame honoree in 2010. Luke loved Harrisonville and the Wildcats and could be seen often cheering them on at various sporting events.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Nicola Clark and husband, Bill, Harrisonville; son, Luke A. Scavuzzo and wife, Candace, Harrisonville; daughter, Lisa Cartee and husband, Jack, Jefferson City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other dear relatives.
Funeral Mass was April 20 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville, with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, with military honors.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Harrisonville Public School Foundation.
