Drexel man faces Jan. 6 charges

A Drexel man has been arrested for his participation in the mob violence Jan. 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. On March 31, Cale Douglas Clayton, 41, was arrested at his home by agents with the FBI’s Kansas City Field Office.

According to the arrest affidavit, Clayton has been charged with assaulting and resisting officers, civil disorder, theft of government property, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds and disorderly conduct in the grounds or a capitol building.

His case has been assigned to Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui with the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

The case against Clayton began with an online tip submitted Jan. 7, 2021, to the FBI National Threat Operations Center, according to a report by the Department of Justice.

According to the affidavit, Clayton was previously interviewed by FBI agents March 15, 2021. During the interview, Clayton told agents he traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the rally for President Donald Trump, but said he did not riot, engage in violence or commit any acts of vandalism.

Only recently, on March 25, was a criminal complaint filed against Clayton, which was approved by Faruqui March 28.

In the warrant, Clayton is supposedly identified by police body-worn camera footage which show him wearing a red hat and red Chiefs’ sweatshirt while participating in riots and confronting law enforcement officers.

“You guys are losing a lot of bodies,” he is reported to have said to officers at the time. “Get that pepper spray out…not enough. Think about it. The revolution. You ain’t gonna stop it. It’s already happening…you guys are just gonna be a little speed bump along the way.”

Among the charges against him, Clayton is accused of taking a police baton that was dropped by law enforcement and using it to try and take another officer’s riot shield. When police attempted to recover the baton from Clayton, he allegedly assaulted one of the officers. Later, he also allegedly grabbed an officer’s helmet in another confrontation before he was detained and ultimately released without charges.

“We are going to win. You don’t have enough for all of us. You might hit me once or twice. You might spray me with pepper spray. I don’t give a f***,” Clayton is alleged to have said. “There ain’t enough for millions of people here and you know it.”

Clayton’s case is still being investigated by the FBI’s Kansas City office and the FBI in Washington. Reports say he was indicted March 31 in the Federal Courthouse in Kansas City, but it is unclear where he is currently located and when he is to have his next court appearance.
