Dorothy McCown
Dec. 28, 2021 – April 18, 2021
Dorothy McCown, 86, Butler, died April 18 Butler Center. She was born Dec. 31, 1934, in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Albert Killworth and Winifred Stanworth.
She grew up in England during World War II and as a young girl she witnessed the bombing of England beginning in 1940. It was then she was separated from her parents and sent to live with caretakers in a safe area.
As a young lady, Dorothy lived and worked in Oxford, England, until she moved to the United States to marry the love of her life, Owen McCown.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Owen, in 2005, and sisters, Mavis and Jean Killworth.
She is survived by her dear friends and adopted children, Joyce and David Gray, Butler; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, William Killworth, Birmingham, England; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Cremation, with private family inurnment services to take place at a later date.

Tracy S. McLain
Oct. 25, 1961 – April 17, 2021
Tracy Scott McLain, 59, Raymore, son of Neil and Sharon McLain, Butler, died April 17 at Saint Luke’s South Hospital, Overland Park, Kansas. He was surrounded by love from his family. Tracy was born at Noll Memorial Hospital in Bethany Oct. 25, 1961.
Tracy was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Raymore.
He attended grade school in Chillicothe and finished fifth and sixth grades in Raymore, followed by graduating from high school at RaymorePeculiar.
Tracy was a star athlete holding many records and awards in track and cross country.
After graduation, he attended CMSU in Warrensburg on a track scholarship.
Tracy was a dedicated employee of Pepsico for more than 18 years. He never met a stranger, cared about his friends and loved animals.
His hobbies were golf, music and collecting vintage stereo equipment. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tracy deeply loved his family. He will be greatly missed by his parents, Neil and Sharon McLain, Butler; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Lynne McLain; niece, Lynnsey Shade and husband, Randy; nephew, Lee McLain and wife, Emily; and three great-nieces, Izabella Rose Shade, Scarlett James Shade and Magnolia Ann McLain.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Pauline McLain and Doyle and Harriett Booth; and a cousin, Travis Booth.
He was very proud of his family. He will be missed so much.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date under direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.

Kim D. Osborn
Dec. 14, 1963 – April 16, 2021
Kim D. Osborn, 57, Adrian, died April 16 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City. Kim was born Dec 14, 1963, in Butler, the daughter of Carl Eugene and Peggy (Bruce) Osborn.
She was a lifelong area resident and a 1982 graduate of Archie High School. After high school, Kim attended beauty school and spent her career as a beautician, primarily working at Great Clips in Lee’s Summit.
Kim was preceded in death by her parents; A sister, Carla Osborn Reed; and a daughter, Ashley Tabor.
She is survived by a son, Dalton Osborn and Brianna, Adrian; a daughter, Alyssa Tabor and Nathan, Adrian; four grandchildren, Delaney, Kinsley, Carley and Ashlynn; as well as, many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services were April 27 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian. Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Earl E. Pierce
Feb. 27, 1944 – April 20, 2021
Earl Pierce 77, Butler, died April 20 at his home in Butler. Earl Eugene Pierce was born Feb. 27, 1944, in Clinton, the son of Earl and Blanche Maulden Pierce. He married Judith Grimsley June 1, 1985.
Earl had a long successful career as a forklift operator, working in many warehouses throughout the years.
He worked for Golden Valley and Clearfield Cheese in Clinton, Payless Cashways in Sedalia, Bent Tree Harbor and Eichler Furniture in Warsaw.
He was a proud member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Butler.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years Judith Pierce; sons, Wayne and Bill Pierce; stepchildren, Perry Ewbank, Tracy Ewbank and wife Angela, and Jennifer Doring and husband PJ; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members and friends.
Cremation with memorial services will be at 2 p.m. May 15, at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler. A visitation will follow the service along with a private family inurnment in Benjamin Cemetery, Amoret.
Friends are welcome to attend, masks are encouraged and social distancing should be observed.

Quinton Setzer
July 13, 1960 – April 19, 2021
Quinton Setzer, 60, formerly of Butler, died April 19. He was born July 13, 1960, in Kansas City, the son of Kenny Setzer and Carolyn Weatherman Norberry.
He grew up in the Butler area near Spruce and attended the Ballard School.
Quinton was known to be a hard worker and held several jobs throughout his life.
He worked building homes for Kelly Moise, pouring concrete with Dennis Chastine and driving a truck and working on the farm for Gardner Trucking. At each job, Quinton developed lifelong friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an uncle Bobby Bowlin; and a cousin Ken Gurly.
He is survived by his daughters, Jamie, Skylar and Krista; and a son Waylan; grandchildren, Drea Shreve-Setzer, Kyler Setzer, Addison Kuda and Oliver Holmes; an aunt, Sue Lancaster; an uncle, Billy Weatherman; and by many cousins, extended family members and many dear friends.
Funeral services were April 24 at the Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler. Burial was in the Radford Cemetery near Spruce.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family for funeral expenses.

Terry D. Atwood
March 9, 1958 – April 16, 2021
Terry Dean Atwood, Harrisonville, was born March 9, 1958, in Wellington, Kansas, the son of Arthur Eugene Atwood and Pats Darlene Egersett. Ge died April 16 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, at the age of 63 years, 1 month and 7 days.
Terry was employed as parts manager for Galen-Boyer Pontiac in Independence until his retirement. He was a lifelong area resident and a 197 graduate of Harrisonville High School. He was quite a jokester and had a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Misty Dawn Atwood; a brother, James Atwood; a sister, Vickie Smith; and his step-father, Abe Egersett.
Terry is survived by his mother, Pasty Egersett, Independence; his father and step-mother, Gene and Ruby Atwood, Forsyth; a brother, Richard Atwood and Kathy, Columbia, Tennessee; his lifelong friend, Pam Dawson, Harrisonville; other relatives and a host of friends.
Cremation. Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date.

Leah D. Doll
July 19 1962 – April 16, 2021
Leah Diane Doll, 58, Garden City, died at her home April 16 with her husband Brian by her side. Leah was born July 19, 1962, at Conley Maternity Hospital in Kansas City, the daughter of Don and Sue Hocking.
She went to school at Raytown South and graduated with her class of 1980 GED. She put herself through nursing school and worked serving others up until the time of her illness.
Leah married Brian doll July 8, 2017. They enjoyed life together in many ways. They spent their time riding the four-wheeler, mushroom hunting, gardening and canning their vegetables. The best thing was having each other to talk to, listen to, laugh with and enjoy each other’s company.
Leah gave her life to the Lord and served him until he took her home.
Leah was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Sue Hocking; two daughters Tara Denny and Brooke Wall; and a nephew Adam Barnes.
Leah is survived by her beloved husband and best friend Brian; two daughters, Rachelle Blackburn, Hamilton, and Lacy Denny, Kansas City; three sons, Lane, of the home, Drake, Kansas City, and Dalton, Texas; a sister, Denise Barnes, Omaha, Arkansas; one stepbrother, Curt Hocking, Kansas City; nine grandchildren, Mariah, Hunter, Hudson, Braylon, Gavin, Camden, Dalton, Lane and Dexter; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whom will all miss her beautiful smile, her contagious laugh and her sharp witty personality.
Funeral services were April 21 at the Dickey funeral Home, Harrisonville, with burial in the Clearfork Cemetery, Garden City.

Thera O. Lavelock
Oct. 10, 1932 – April 16, 2021
Thera “Oleta” (Slater) (Rains) Lavelock was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Grant county, Arkansas, and died April 16 at her home in Cleveland, surrounded by the love of her family, at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 6 days.
She was the daughter of James L. and Ruth Mae (Bowman) Slater.
Oleta spent her younger years and attended school in the Pine Bluff, Arkansas, area.
Jan. 13, 1951, Oleta married Dallas Noah Rains in Yellville, Arkansas. Oleta and Dallas lived in Olathe, Kansas, and Kansas City, before moving to Cleveland in 1958. Dallas Rains died Dec. 13, 1978, and Oleta continued to make her home in Cleveland.
Jan. 13, 1984, Oleta married Rodger Noland Lavelock in Cleveland, and they too made their home in Cleveland. Rodger Lavelock died Dec. 2, 2013.
Oleta was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her life revolved around her family.
She was also a woman of strong faith and was a member of the West Line Christian Church. Oleta always gave way more than she had and then some. You see, she had a knack for all the little things that most people overlook. Which in retrospect, those little things turn out to be the biggest of all.
Her laughter was easily brought and her comforting piano and singing skills were Heaven sent. Oleta endured the worst of the worst yet remained strong to make sure everyone else was always taken care of first. Always.
Elegance and class intertwined with boundless love, hope and faith. She will always be here because of countless wonderful memories she leaves behind. One could always learn by her example. God bless her and God blessed us with her.
In addition to her husbands; Oleta was preceded in death by two brothers, J.L. Slater and Rudy Slater; and two sisters, Evon Yeager and Novella Lacy.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Dallas Rains and David Alan Rains, both of Cleveland; a daughter, Barbara Diane Dugan, Lee’s Summit; a brother, Ronnie Slater, Arkansas; two sisters, Belva Yep, Ozark, and Valinda Taylor, Pine Bluff, Arkansas; a grandson, Mike Rains and wife, Shanlee, Cleveland; a granddaughter, Rachel Nicole Campbell and husband Chance, Lee’s Summit; four great-grandchildren, Hadley, Ryder, Ava and Hudson; other relatives and many friends.
A visitation was April 25 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

John R. Leach
June 2, 1952 – April 21, 2021
John Robert Leach, 68, Harrisonville, died April 21 at his home in Harrisonville. No services are scheduled at this time.
John was born June 2, 2951, in Anchorage, Alaska, the son of John Alvin and Patricia Louise (Seal) Leach.
He married Patricia Diane Anderson Oct. 11, 1974, in Harrisonville.
John lived in Harrisonville since 1969 and was a 1970 graduate of Harrisonville High School.
He was a supervisor at Marion Labs and Marion/Dow in Kansas City. He was a jack-of-all-trades and an active antique trader.
John was preceded in death by his father.
He survived by his wife, Patricia of the home; two sons, Aric Leach and his wife, Emily, and Jimmy Briden and his wife, Richella, all of Harrisonville; a daughter, Robyn Leach, California; his mother, Pat Leach, Harrisonville; a brother, Richard Leach, Harrisonville; a sister, Brenda Wyatt, Harrisonville; seven grandchildren, Evlyn, Gwenyth, Lily, Finnegan, Corbin, Krista and Kaleb; and a great-grandson, Carson.

Jay L. Patterson
Oct. 8, 1946 – April 20, 2021
Jay Linn “Butch” Patterson, Belton, formerly of Harrisonville, died April 20 at his home. He was 74. Jay was born Oct. 8, 1946, in Harrisonville, the son of Max O’Neil and Lillian Natilee (Cox) Patterson.
His early childhood was spent on the family farm near Harrisonville, where he and his only sibling, Glenna Sue, helped with the dairy business started by their parents and grandparents.
He attended Hutchinson School through the eighth grade and the Daugherty Methodist Church.
After the family moved “in town” to Harrisonville, Jay attended Harrisonville High School and graduated in the spring of 1964. Beginning in his freshman year, Jay participated in a variety of extracurricular activities.
During high school, he served as treasurer of the freshman class; president of his senior class; president of the letterman’s club; and president of the 4-H club. He enjoyed participating in school plays, speech contests, including the American Legion oratory contest and music with a double quartet.
In the summer between his junior and senior year, Jay was selected as a delegate to the Missouri Boys State and attended in the summer of 963.
However, Jay’s biggest enjoyment throughout his life was sports. As a student athlete, Jay played and lettered in football and track and served as the boys high school basketball manager.
The Kansas City Star appointed him as a student-correspondent for Harrisonville High School and his reporting was often featured in the newspaper highlighting Harrisonville teams.
Always industrious, Jay worked with his father, first at the Standard Oil gas station his parents owned and then at Sunnyside Dairy running milk routes to deliver Borden milk to both residents and business in Cass County.
Following his graduation from high school, Jay was accepted to the University of Missouri-Columbia, but elected to attend Central Missouri State University, now UCM, in Warrensburg. While at UCM, he studied business administration and industrial management.
His winning personality and easy-going charm made him a natural at sales.
He loved the transportation business and worked as a sales manager for several large trucking firms throughout Kansas City and the Midwest where he excelled at developing customer accounts and managing trucking terminal operations. He was active in the Traffic and Transportation Club of Kansas City where he was later elevated to president of the board of directors.
In January1982, he married Diane Curry of North Kansas City. Diane and her three children along with his son, Darren Patterson, created a warm and loving family unit that enjoyed many adventures together.
Jay and Diane renewed their vows in 1998, at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church with their entire blended family serving as the wedding party.
Jay was a devoted Christian and an active member of the United Methodist church. He attended Sunday school regularly and often taught classes as is health allowed.
He loved to attend Harrisonville High School football games with his dear friends, retired pastors Udell Wolf and George Moore. He would often drive the trio to away games, each with hat in hand as there was nary a hair on any head.
As a young man, Jay excelled at bowling. He and his teammates were often hard to beat on league nights and Jay recorded one perfect 300 game. During his young adulthood, Jay loved to serve as a referee for high school football games and did so until he married and started a family.
He was an avid reader and in his retirement enjoyed growing good Missouri tomatoes.
A kind and generous soul, Jay was cherished by both family and friends. He loved to teas and torment those he loved and always enjoyed a good joke or well-timed quip. His mischievous grin and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, of the home; four children, Michelle Black and husband, Jeff, Harrisonville; Charles Curry and wife, Stacy, Belton; Darren Patterson and wife Bonnie, Adrian; and Rebecca Newman, Garden City; his sister Glenna sue (Patterson) Dudley, Peculiar; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren with one on the way; nieces and nephews; extended family; and beloved friends.
Funeral services were April 26 at the Harrisonville United Methodist Church, with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.

Tabithia Jean Riffle, 34, Garden City, died April 6 at her home. She was born Sept. 20, 1986.
She is survived by her father, Stephen Riffle and wife, Mary, Garden City; siblings, Chuck and wife, Anna, Garden City, Victoria, Peculiar, Noah, Holden, Rebecka and Roman, both of Garden City; a niece, Ashyton; and a nephew, Blaine; paternal grandparents, Richard and Carolynn Riffle, Garden City; aunts and uncles, Susan and Shaun Holden, Harrisonville, Keith Jennings, Warsaw, James and wife, Margaret Smith, Blue Springs; cousins, Luke, Reagan, Peyton and Walker; other relatives and friends.

Alyssa R. Riggert

Alyssa Renee Riggert, 16, Harrisonville, died April 13, 2021. Alyssa was born Sept. 21, 2004, in Overland Par, Kansas, a daughter of Robert Keith Cox and Michelle Renee Riggert.
She had lived and attended school in Belton.
Alyssa was preceded in death by her grandmother, Linda Riggert; great-grandmother, Mable Zupon; and great-grandfather, Vernon Riggert.
She is survived by her father, Robert Cox, and stepmother, Dana Cox, Harrisonville; her mother, Michelle Renee Riggert, and her stepfather, James Engelby, Belton; two sisters, Tayja Cox and Teresa Cox, Garden City; stepsister, Allison Dye, Harrisonville, and Ethan Engelby, Belton; two brothers, Robert Simmons, III, and Alexis, Lee’s Summit and Dillon Simmons, Kansas City; her paternal grandmother, Joyce Montoya, Denver, Colorado; paternal grandfather, Robert Simmons, Sr., Nevada; maternal grandparents, Tad Riggert and Teri, Raymore, and Ala Ross, Kansas City; maternal great-grandmother, Joyce Riggert, Columbia; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
A celebration of life was April 24 at the Memorial Park Shelter No. 2, Belton.

Loraine L. Stanely

Loraine Lynn (Ryberg) Stanley, 61, of St. Joseph, formerly of Creigthon, died April 6 at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph.
Loraine is survived by her three sons, Chris D. Ryberg and his wife, Heather, St. Joseph, Patrick Ryberg and his wife, Shanda, Harrisonville, and Lucas Stanley and his wife, Missy, Drexel; a brother, Clint Beck, of California; a sister, Rebecca Ryberg, Garden City; six grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Beverly Walker
Aug. 30, 1928 – April 14, 2021
Beverly Walker, 92, was born Au. 30, 1928, at the family home in Creighton. She was the daughter of Harold Logan Brown and Lucia Esther (Dale) Brown. She died April 14 at her home in Creighton surrounded by daughters.
Beverly grew up in Creighton. She and her sister, Betty, enjoyed living in town. Their activities involved church, music, family and friends. The girls, Beverly and Betty, shared a bedroom and were best friends. Beverly said she had the first bicycle in town and that all the kids in town learned how to ride on her bike.
Beverly attended school in Creighton and graduated from Creighton High School in 1946.
Beverly attended Central Missouri State College (now the University of Central Missouri), majoring in music education with a minor in business.
While home from college one weekend to watch her sister play basketball, Beverly met a very good-looking guy from Ballard named Gerald Walker. Beverly and Gerald quickly became college sweethearts and were married Aug. 14, 1949. Beverly graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in the summer of 1950.
Beverly started her teaching career at Green Ridge. During the next 16 years, Beverly taught at Clearmont, Elwood, Rushville, North Platte and Wathena School district. She taught music, business and even English at times.
During those same years, Beverly and Gerald welcomed four daughters into their lives, Jane, Joellen, Jerri and Jennifer. In 1965, the Walker family returned to Beverly’s hometown of Creighton, where Gerald became superintendent of the Sherwood School District and Beverly taught music in Gerald’s hometown of Ballard.
In 1968, Beverly decided to return to college to pursue a Master of Science Degree in Speech and Language Pathology. She attended CMSC (now the University of Central Missouri) in Warrensburg.
The first summer of courses were all science prerequisites in order to be admitted to the graduate program. Both Jerri and Jennifer can remember going to sleep to the sound of a typewriter and waking up to that same sound.
Beverly finished her teaching career by becoming the first speech and language pathologist for the Sherwood School District. She retired from full-time teaching in 1988.
Beverly was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church where she was the Pianist and active in the United Methodist Women’s organization.
Beverly was an avid sports fan enjoying the KC Chiefs, KC Royals, MU Tigers and college basketball.
She enjoyed travel, sailing with Gerald on their boat, playing cards (especially bridge), watching Hallmark movies because of the happy endings and game shows to keep her wits sharp.
But the most important thing in her life was her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren., as well as the extended family of her sister and sister-in-law. Family gatherings were always busy, loud and fun.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; two daughters, Jane Smith and Joellen Walker; and two brothers-in-law, Les Wainscott and Arlie Jackson.
Beverly is survived by two daughters, Jerri and John Carter, Fayette and Jennifer Cramer, Belton; five grandchildren, Amanda and Trevor Schenk, Liz and Greg Geist, Racheal and Dan Kendrick, Jessica and Cody Smith, and Matthew and Cindy Cramer; her 13 great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Alex, Emma, Jayelin, Kauffman, Alex G., Hallaway, Ina Jacob, Cora, Bauer, Mira and August; as well as her sister Betty Jackson; sister-in-law, Rosellen Waiscott; and son-in-law, Steve Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gerald and Beverly Walker Scholarship fund. As life-long educators, there is no better way to honor Gerald and Beverly’s memory than to support the scholarship established in 2001 for the well-deserving students of Sherwood High School. Since its founding, the fund has granted more than 35 scholarships.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was April 25 at the Creighton United Methodist Church, Creighton, with inurnment at the Grant Cemetery following the service.

Wendell L. Yeager
Oct. 11, 1936 – April 16, 2021
Wendell L. Yeager, 84, Harrisonville, died April 16 at his home in Harrisonville. Wendell was born Oct. 11, 1936 in Marion, Indiana, the son of Oliver W. and Doris Laverna (Murch) Yeager.
He grew up in Marion and was a 1954 graduate of Marion High School. He continued his education by receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
Wendell married Barbara Voss Sept. 8, 1957, in Marion.
Wendell moved to Harrisonville in 1967 and was the manager of the Anaconda Wire & Cable Plant, later the Anaconda/Erickson plant until 1984.
Wendell was vice president of manufacturing for ITT Cable and BICC Cable and worked at manufacturing plants throughout the northeast until his retirement in 1998.
Wendell and Barbara returned to Harrisonville after his retirement to be closer to family and friends.
Always active in community affairs, Wendell was a charter member and the first president of the Harrisonville Rotary Club, a member of Cass Masonic Lodge No. 147 in Harrisonville and Ararat Shrine in Kansas City. He was a member of the Cass County Historical Society and the Harrisonville United Methodist Church.
He also served on the board of directors of the Harrisonville Public School foundation and C.J. Robard MFG in Harrisonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Ryan Humphrey, and Ryan’s wife, Laura.
Wendall is survived by his wife, Barbara Yeager, of the home; a son, Scott Yeager and wife, Jana, Sugar Land, Texas; a daughter, Darcy Humphrey, Harrisonville; and three grandchildren, Kyle Humphrey, Reid Yeager and Hope Yeager.
Funeral services were April 21 at the United Methodist Church in Harrisonville. A Masonic service was held Wednesday at the church. Burial was in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Harrisonville United Methodist Church or to St. Croix Hospice.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
