Robert E. Bird
Aug. 4, 1954 – March 13, 2021

Ret. United States Army Sgt. Robert Eugene Bird, Dixon, was born Aug. 4, 1954, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Richard Deane and Nora Gertrude (Beckstead) Bird. He died March 13 at his home at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 9 days.

June 27, 1975, Robert married Chi Suk Choe in Seoul, Korea.

Robert was a sergeant in the United States Army until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement, he worked in transport for the Army as a civilian.

He was an avid bass fisherman, fished several bass tournaments with his mother and loved to hunt.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Chi Suk Bird, Nov. 10, 1985; and his brother, Michael Bird.

Robert is survived by a son, Thomas Bird, Waynesville; a daughter, Tanya Bird, New Orleans, Louisiana; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Bird, Peculiar; a sister, Sherry Nichol, Butler; other relatives and friends.

Military graveside services were March 18 at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

E. Nadean Cummings
July 9, 1927 – March 12, 2021

Evelyn Nadean Cummings, 93, Harrisonville, died March 12 at Golden Years Nursing Home. Nadean was born July 9, 1927, on a farm southeast of Harrisonville and was the oldest child and daughter of John and Ethel (Williams) Kochsmeier.

She joined the Grand River Baptist Church in December 1945.

On Oct. 15, 1966, she married Anver Ferrell Cummings and they resided on a farm southwest of Harrisonville until his death Sept. 11, 1997.

Nadean sold the farm and moved to a senior citizen complex in Harrisonville after Anver’s death. Nadean enjoyed doing word searches and coloring in her free time.

Nadean was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Ethel Rosalie; a brother, Jim Kochsmeier; a nephew; a step-grandson, Michael Lee Morris; and step-sons, Walter Price Cummings and Ferrell Dean Cummings.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Lou Hicks, Warsaw; nephews and nieces; step-daughters, Maxine Morris and Freda Cummings; six step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and many step-great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was March 16 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Interment followed in the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman. Memorial contributions are suggested to Ascend Hospice or a charity of your choice.

Dorothy P. Ford
May 30, 1930 – March 17, 2021

Dorothy Pearl Ford, 90, Harrisonville, formerly of Archie, died March 17 at St. Luke’s East, Lee’s Summit. Dorothy was born May 30, 1930, in Adrian, the daughter of James Harper and Edna Pearl (Wolfe) Hartsell.

She had lived in Adrian and Pleasanton, Kansas, before moving to Archie where she lived most of her life. Dorothy married Lloyd W. Ford June 28, 1947 in Mound City, Kansas.

Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Archie and was a member of the Chat and Sew group at the church. She had worked as a secretary for the OATS bus service for a number of years.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd on Nov. 8, 1999; a brother; her sister and brother-in-law, Edna Mae “Sally” and George Shaw; a son-in-law, Bob Harrington; and a niece, Darlene Finke.

She is survived by a son, Michael Ford and Judy, Harrisonville; two daughters, Connie Harrington, Nevada, and Linda Ford, Harrisonville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were March 22 at the First Baptist Church in Archie with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Memorial contributions may be made to Missouri Baptist Children’s Home or to the church.

Billy J. Gregg
March 29, 1963 – March 18, 2021

Billy Joe Gregg, East Lynne, was born March 29, 1963, in Harrisonville, the son of Joe Wesley and Ethel Lee (Kagarice) Gregg. He died March 18 at his home at the age of 57 years, 11 months and 18 days. He was a lifelong East Lynne resident.

Jan. 8, 1983, Billy married Diane Lynn Burton in Blue Springs.

Billy was employed with Freddie’s Foundation, Greenwood, and later for Michael’s Foundation, Pleasant Hill, before his retirement.

Billy enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, had a passion for collecting knives, pocket watches, flashlights and loved watching tractor pulls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Billy is survived by his wife, Diane L. Gregg, of the home, his brother, Mike Gregg and wife, Shelly, and his sister, Jo Lee Gregg, all of East Lynne; his two cats, Sally and Smokey; other relatives and a host of friends.

Cremation. A celebration of life visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

March 25 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

The family suggests contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Hayden D. Harris
June 7, 2002 – March 6, 2021

Hayden D. Harris, 18, Deepwater, formerly of Harrisonville, died March 6 near Mt. Vernon. Hayden was born June 7, 2002, in Kansas City, the daughter of John C. and Carrie (Eisel) Harris.

As the youngest of five children, Hayden had no shortage of spunk and personality. She was full of life, possessed a longing for adventure and she didn’t know a stranger.

Hayden attended Harrisonville High School and later, Lone Jack High School.

She was artistic in many ways. She loved to draw and had a natural talent for ukulele and often wrote and sang her own songs. She always knew how to put a smile on the faces of those around her and had a unique way of making people feel loved.

No one could have prepared her family for such an untimely death, but they are comforted by the support of those who loved her.

Hayden will be sorely missed by all of those whose lives she touched, but she is at peace. The Lord planted the tree and picked the fruit.

Hayden is survived by her father, John Harris, Lone Jack; her mother and stepfather, Carrie Ware and Jayson, Deepwater; two brothers, Jericho Harris, Ouray, Colorado, and Joshua Harris, Fort Wainwright, Alaska; two sisters, Holly Mangold and Keanu, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Hannah Harris, Denver, Colorado; a step-sister, Madeline Ware, Deepwater; her paternal grandmother, Linda Drake, Lee’s Summit; her maternal grandparents, Mark and Kathy Eisel, Harrisonville, and David and Linda VanCleave, Springfield; and her maternal great-grandmother, Dixie Wright, Garden City.

A celebration of life service was March 17 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Judy R. Martley
March 23, 1943 – March 15, 2021

Judy Rose Martley, 77, Garden City, was born, March 23, 1943, in Kansas City, the daughter of Robert and Ruth Weidemann. She died March 15 at Saint Luke’s East Hospital, Lee’s Summit.

Judy married Joseph Martley Nov. 30, 1962, in Harrisonville. He preceded her in death in November 2014.

Judy was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, flowers, collecting antiques and crystal. She especially loved decorating her home for all holidays, especially Christmas.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her six children, Robert and Pamela Morgan, Freeman, Cherryl Morgan, Pleasant Hill, John and Jan Morgan, Belton, Phillip and Connie Martley, Harrisonville, Brian and Tara Martley, Holden, and Joelene and Steve Clayrborn, Garden City; eight grandchildren, Courtney, Justin, Josh, Chris, David, Dillion, McKenzie and Kaylee; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Jerry Weidemann, Garden City; other relatives and friends.

Cremation has been accorded. No services are scheduled.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cass County Council on Aging and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

James Mattingley
May 31, 1981 – March 17, 2021

James David “J.D.” Mattingley, 39, Kansas City, formerly of Harrisonville, died at his home March 17. J.D. was born May 31, 1981, in Kansas City and had lived in Archie, Garden City and Harrisonville, before moving to Kansas City in 2015.

He attended Briarwood State School in Harrisonville. J.D. was a light to everyone. Some of his passions of life were country
music, Chiefs football, baseball, building houses and doing anything with the people he loved.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Tina Mattingley; paternal grandparents, James and Nadine Mattingley; maternal grandparents, Myrt and Manuel Woodward; and his maternal grandfather, Ben Cole.

J.D. is survived by his father, Jerry Mattingley, Garden City; two brothers, Jacob and Ginger, Pleasanton, Kansas, and Matt Mattingley, Clinton; a sister, Alicia Cornell and Josh, Archie; his maternal grandparents, Ron and Kitty Fountain, Deepwater; four nieces; a nephew; roommate/good friend, Eric Hastings; and caregivers, Brandi Nickens, James Matteson, Bonnie Eads
and Katy McIlwee; many other family and friends.

A celebration of life gathering was March 20 at the Archie Community Center in Archie. The family suggests contributions to the United Way.

Ronald L. McCale
Oct. 26, 1944 – March 11, 2021

Ronald Lee “Ron” McCale was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Kansas City, and died March 11 at Centerpoint Medical Center,Independence, at the age of 76 years 4 months and 13 days. He was the son of Leonard E. and Della Ruth (Wintermote)
McCale.

Ron spent his younger years in Drexel, graduating from Drexel High School in 1962. After graduation, Ron joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country in Vietnam from 1963 until April 1967.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Ron put his Navy training as a HVAC engineer to use in his civilian life, First working for Bendix, then Western Electric. After being laid off from Western Electric, he went to work as a union roofer until Kansas City Life Insurance Company offered him a position as a HVAC engineer.

While at Kansas City Life, he took many hours of continuing education in the HVAC field so he could keep up to date on all of the advances in his profession. Ron retired from Kansas City Life Insurance Company in 2005.

Dec. 30, 1971, Ron married Linda Alley in Belton. After their marriage, they lived in the Tarsney Lakes and Baldwin Park areas before settling in Pleasant Hill to make their home.

Linda McCale died Dec. 28, 2008, and Ron continued to live in Pleasant Hill.

In 2009, Ron met his life-partner, Bernadette Dryer, and moved to Holden, where he was still residing at the time of his death.

Ron was a natural born caregiver, always helping and caring for anyone in need.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and storytelling. Ron completed a life-long dream when he built his cabin at the lake in Warsaw, with the help of his brothers, son and grandson.

Above all else, Ron loved his family. He was always there if any of them needed him and he instilled in each and everyone of them the importance of kindness, respect, love and family.

In addition to his wife, Linda McCale, Ron was preceded in death by his parents; Leonard and Della McCale; and an infant daughter, Daphne McCale.

He is survived by his life partner, Bernadette Dryer, Holden; a son, Randall L. McCale, Holden; two daughters, Rhonda (McCale) Dunham, Independence, and Michelle (McCale) Jones and husband, John, Adrian; five brothers, Jerry McCale and wife Pauline, Blue Springs, Dean McCale and Larry McCale and wife, Lynda, all of Pleasant Hill, DavidMcCale and wife L inda, Belton, and Rick McCale, Grandview; three sisters, Donna (McCale) Smith, Kansas City, Sandra (McCale) Hauk, Overland Park, Kansas, and Deborah (McCale) Morrison and husband, Robert, Peculiar; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside funeral services were March 17 at the Lone Jack Cemetery, Lone Jack, with the Rev. Tim Casteel officiating.

Full military honors were conducted by the United States Navy and VFW Post 3118 Honor Guard of Pleasant Hill.

Eddie W. Pulliam
Jan. 17, 1933 – March 13, 2021

Eddie Wayne Pulliam, 88, Harrisonville, died March 13 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville. Eddie was born Jan. 17, 1933, in Archie, one of 10 children of Robert Lee and Edith Mabel (Shawgo) Pulliam.

He was a lifelong Cass County resident and had attended Prairie View Rural School No. 105, Hickory Grove Rural School No. 55 and Bills Rural School No. 90.

Eddie served in the U.S. Army with the Corp of Engineers from 1953 to 1955. He married Evelyn Patricia Miller May 13, 1956, in Drexel. Eddie worked for General Motors at the Delco Battery Plant in Olathe, Kansas, 30 years before his retirement in 1987. He was a member of UAW Local No. 31.

He was preceded in death by his par ents, four brothers; four sisters; and aninfant son, Eddie Wayne Pulliam, Jr.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Evelyn Pat Pulliam, Harrisonville; two sons, Denny and Debbie Pulliam, Harrisonville, and Rick and Carol Pulliam, Independence; a brother, Charlie and Tellma Pulliam, South Beloit, Illinois; four grandchildren, Shelbi Devine, Jamie and Andy Dobnikar, Jessie and Wes Brown and Crystal Broski; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Funeral services were March 19 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to Cass Career Center FFA.

Chad S. Rogers
March 30, 1979 – Feb. 27, 2021

Chad S. Rogers, Drexel, died unexpectedly at the age of 41. Chad Shane Rogers was born March 30, 1979, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of Roy and Vickie Gaddy Rogers.

He grew up in Marietta, Oklahoma, near Lake Murray and met the love of his life, Sarah Pittman, at the age of 18. They were married May 1, 2003, when he was 23.

Chad had a sense of humor that lit up any room. Though he was only on earth for a short time, he is remembered everyday by his wife, family and friends.

Chad is survived by Sarah Rogers, his beloved wife of 18 years; his mother, Vickie Rogers, Del City, Oklahoma., his father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Sandy Hocker, Drexel; a brother, Joey Kensinger and wife Rebecca; nephew, Jacob Hurst, Blanchard, Oklahoma; a niece, Krystin Swart and husband, Chay, and their son, Easton; his nephew, Mike Graw and wife, Tabby, and their son, Blaine Graw; his niece, Jessica Graw, and her son, TJ Graw; along with many more loved ones and friends.

Cremation with a celebration of life service at noon April 10 at the Drexel Community Building, followed by a fish fry dinner.

Penny S. Sexton
May 15, 1956 – March 16, 2021

Penny Sue (Lewis) Sexton, 64, Peculiar, died March 16. She was born May 15, 1956, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, the daughter of Fred “Henry” Lewis and Eleanore (Andersen) Lewis as their first-born child.

She mainly grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Center High School with the class of 1974.

Much of Penny’s childhood was spent looking after her 13 younger brothers and sisters. Out of high school, Penny worked in insurance claims for Dodson Insurance Group for 22 years where she met many of her lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Henry Lewis, Sr., and Eleanore M. Lewis; her little sisters, Lynne Marie Lewis and Tilda Londre; and little brothers, Fred Henry Lewis, Jr., and Bobby Lewis.

Penny is survived by her husband, Wayne Sexton; her four children, Brian, Marissa and Adam, Hayley and Parker; her three grandsons, Eli, Weston and Grant; siblings, Cathy Lewis, Andy Lewis, Jimmy Lewis and Christine, Karen Rohan and Mickey Meehan, Susie Nowatzki and Joe, Cindy Lewis, Donny Lewis and Amanda, Amy Van Wagner and Michael, and Jenny Hyder and Eric; sister-in-law, Jocelynn Sorcic and Tony; brother-in-law, David Sexton and Lori; parents-in-law, Jerry and Jeanne Sexton; nieces and nephews, Jessie Lewis, Emma Taylor, Syd Parrish, Sarah Lewis, Taylor Nowatzki, Presley Lewis, Sierra Lewis, Gage Rohan, Graham Londre, Matt Lewis, Henry Londre, Caleb Lewis, Cameron Duffin, Tanner Nowatzki, Sophie Lewis, Ellie Londre, Kennedy Lewis, Cassidy Duffin, Addy Londre, Maddie Van Wagner, Jacob Van Wagner and Alex Hyder; great-nieces and nephews:, Eric and Cain, Tavious, Chandon, Desi, Tulsi, Briar, Mary, Brooklynn, Delaney, Charlotte and Phoebe; her great-great-nephews, Roman and Romeo.

In 1982 while she was out dancing with her sisters, she met the love of her life, Wayne Sexton. They would go on to get married and build a life that they loved and family that they raised in Peculiar.

Penny would eventually step away from working full time and stay home with her children. She spent many years watching young children from her own home and proving to be a great caregiver with a big heart for the little ones.

Penny enjoyed reading, arts and crafts, cooking and dancing, but her greatest love was spending time with her family, who she was extremely proud of.

Penny battled an extensive fight against stage-four metastatic breast cancer in the last six and one-half years of her life, and overcame many obstacles. She beat the odds by a lot and smiled her entire way through her courageous battle, which is how the family wishes you to remember her, lighting up the lives around her with her contagious giggle and beautiful smile.

If desired in lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to assist with Penny’s remaining medical expenses through cash or venmo donations to either of her daughters.

A celebration of life was March 21 at Dogwood Gardens, Peculiar.

V. Kayne Smading
June 19, 1977 – March 13, 2021

Vernon Kayne Smading, 43, Harrisonville, died March 13 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville. He was born June 19, 1977, the son of Jerry Wayne and Kathie Ann Daniel Smading in Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Smading, Oct. 16, 2001.

Kayne is survived by a daughter, Sydney Erin Smading, Bonaqua, Tennessee; his mother, Kathie Garren and husband, Larry, Butler; a brother, Kyle Smading and wife, Sandy, Butler; a sister, Holly Smading and partner, Mike Daniels, Harrisonville; and five nieces, Jordyn Garey and husband Evan, Savannah Smading, Tylor Smading, Kalyn Castro and Emily Smading.

Funeral services were March 17 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.

David M. Barnhart

Dec. 8, 1946 – March 11, 2021

David Murel Barnhart, 74, formerly of Butler and more recently Carthage, died March 11 at his home. David was born Dec. 8, 1946, in Clinton, son of James Murel Barnhart and Mary Ellen (Hargrave) Barnhart.

He was a 1956 graduate of Butler High School, Butler. David was a veteran of the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country in England, Scotland, Ethiopia, Korea and Vietnam.

He married the love of his life, Elaine Gilliam, Aug. 10, 1970, at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas City.

David was employed as a Commercial Vehicle Officer for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, retiring after 39 years as the Chief CVO. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Carthage, the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Joplin Rifle Club.

David was an avid leader. He loved nature, deer and turkey hunting, competitive shooting, trains, airplanes, Oliver tractors and farming.

David’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. His faith and complete trust in God set a wonderful example for his family and others who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ellen Marie Young; a brother-in-law, John Young; and a nephew, John David Young.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elaine Barnhart; three sons, Michael David Barnhart and Susan, William Karl Barnhart and Ingrid, and Gregory Joseph Barnhart and Cody; seven grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

A funeral mass was March 17 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Carthage. Burial was in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Rosary was March 16 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Carthage; St. Jude Children’s Hospital; or disabled American Veterans in care of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Barbara G. Dawson

Dec. 30, 1956 – March 17, 2021

Barbara Gayle Dawson, 64, Butler, died March 17 at her home in Butler. She was born Dec. 30, 1956, the daughter of Paul Edward and Betty Jane Gully Hoover in Mexico, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Richard Dawson, Butler; two sons, Elisha Dawson, Butler, and Aaron Dawson, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; a daughter, Jacinda Sullins and husband, Robbi, Butler; a brother, Bentley Hoover, Mexico, Missouri; two sisters, Beverly Vendt and husband, Steve, St. Louis, and Bonnie Tillman and husband, Charles, Mexico; and two grandchildren, MacKenzie and Brynlee Sullins.

A visitation for Barbara Dawson was March 20 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.

Cremation followed.

Dean Hammer

April 14, 1935 – March 14, 2021

Dean Hammer, 85, Amoret, died March 14 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City. Dean was born April 14, 1935, in Westville, Oklahoma, the son of Eli and Nannie Jumper Hammer.

He grew up in Oklahoma and worked as a union carpenter until moving his family to Missouri in the early 1970s.

One of Dean’s greatest loves in life was the rodeo. For many years, Dean would travel all over to compete in as many rodeos as he could. Before retiring in 1993, he threw his last steer at the age of 60.

Dean will forever be remembered as the guy who never knew a stranger, always had a smile, making sure you felt welcome and for his famous lines like, “Lunch is at noon.”

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; 13 siblings; son, Ronnie Hammer; son, Ronald Hammer; and daughter, Deanna Barton.

He is survived by his wife, pat Hazelbaker; step-daughters, Brenda Ratty, and Cathy Kump; his daughter-in-law, Mickie Hammer; son-in-law, Gary Barton; bonus son, Garry Perrymann; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Dean will forever be waving from his front porch in Heaven.

Funeral services for Dean and his son, Ronnie Hammer, were March 21 at the Whiskey Mansion Ranch, Butler. Burial followed in Benjamin Cemetery, Amoret.

Ronnie Hammer

Oct. 30, 1956 – March 15, 2021

Ronnie Hammer, 64, Adrian, died March 15 at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Kansas City. Ronnie Hammer was born Oct. 30, 1956, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the son of Dean and Josephine Blossom Hammer.

He was married to Mickie McEachron. Ronnie worked as a union carpenter most of his life but, jut like his dad, had a love for the rodeo. He would travel all over to compete in various events in each rodeo. He loved to bring home a new buckle, but sometimes just the stories made it all worth it.

Ronnie had a larger than life personality, always had a smile, and a big Hammer hug for you. Ronnie enjoyed his time outdoors, especially with is grandchildren. He was also very talented at beadwork makin many beautiful pieces.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald Hammer; and sister, Deanna Barton.

He is survived by his wife, Mickie Hammer; daughter, Shaffai Stiles and Steven; son, Joshua Eli Hammer and Andrea; sons, Branden Chase Clouse and Becky, Noah James Clouse and Johanna, Anthony Joseph Macias and Martha; step-sisters, Brenda Ratty and Randy, and Cathy Kump; and brother-in-law, Gary Barton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces; one nephew; and many extended family members and friends. funeral services for Ronnie and his father, Dean Hammer, were March 21 at the Whiskey Mansion Ranch, Butler. Burial followed in Benjamin Cemetery, Amoret.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler.
