One dead after pursuit ends in crash

One man is dead and another was seriously wounded as the result of a pursuit by law enforcement that ended in a traffic crash at about 11:13 a.m. Oct. 6 in the area of State Route 7 and southbound I-49.

Sustaining fatal injuries was Ardell W. Hooker, 19, Belton, who was taken to Research Medical Center, Kansas City, and pronounced dead at 3:26 p.m. that day by Dr. J. Simpson.

Dallis D. Henderson, 19, Belton, suffered serious injuries and was taken by LifeFlight to Research Medical Center.

According to a press release from the Harrisonville Police Department, an officer had attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a gold Hyundai for a traffic violation.

Police said the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended in the area of southbound I-49 and 307th Street after the vehicle crashed.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when Henderson, driving a 2006 Hyundai southbound on I-49 traveling at a high rate of speed, traveled off the roadway and struck an embankment.

The accident was investigated by MSGT R.W. Shaul, assisted by Cpl. B. J. Hamerle and TPR. J. C. Ewing. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Harrisonville Police Department also assisted in the investigation.

At this time, police said the investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released.
