John L. Cumpton
Nov. 21, 1982 – Oct. 9, 2019
John Lawrence Cumpton, Creighton, was born Nov. 21, 1982, in St. Joseph the son of Marcus Lee and Lois Ann (Robinson) Cumpton.
He died Oct. 9 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, surrounded by love and family at the age of 36 years, 10 months and 18 days.
John was employed as a warehouse supervisor for Ash Grove Concrete, Harrisonville. He was an elder and member of the Evangel Presbyterian Church, Urich.
He was a 2001 graduate of Sherwood High School, Creighton, were he participated in band and the Marching Marksman.
John was a talented painter, artist, welder and mechanic. He could solve any problem and could fix anything. John was a lifelong area resident.
John became a Tiger Cub Scout when in the first grade. He continued to be involved in scouting, even going back to Bartle Scout Reservation one summer as a young adult leader. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 15 and achieved the rank of Runner in the tribe of Mic-O-Say.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristine Elizabeth Cumpton, of the home; his son, Joshua Laine Cumpton, Cherryvale, Kansas; his parents, Marcus and Lois Cumpton of the home; his sister, Tammy Cumpton and niece, Talia Quinn Cumpton, both of Urich; other relatives and a host of friends.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was held Oct. 19 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Evangel Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, Urich, or the Sherwood High School Color Guard.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
John D. Kiefer
Aug. 25, 1923 – Oct. 12, 2019
John D Kiefer Jr., 96, Harrisonville, was born in the family home on Price Street in Harrisonville Aug. 25, 1923, the son of John D., Sr., and Opal (Toalson) Kiefer.
He died Oct. 12 at his home surrounded by love and family.
Oct. 17, 1953, John was married to Jean Marie Smith in Kansas City.
John was employed as an asphalt superintendent for Midwest Pre-Cote Company. He was a member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and was active in the men’s ministry and choir.
John was a Navy veteran, a Master Mason and a member of the Cass Lodge No. 147 A.F.&A.M. He was known as a hard worker, a good cook, and was a competitive barbecue cook and an excellent gardener. John loved hunting and being outdoors and was proud of his bald head.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Kiefer; and four sisters, Oneita Cain, Geneva Ryan, Marjorie Belcher and Dorothy Gover.
John is survived by his wife, Jean Marie Kiefer, of the home; five children, Jan Cohick (Mark), Kansas City, Joey Adams (Russ), Harrisonville, Jim Kiefer (Janice), Lexington, Jill Marillyn Kiefer, Harrisonville, and Johna Rettman (Greg), Lee’s Summit; grandchildren, Michael Kiefer (Jessica), Richard Kiefer, Karel Cohick, Maggie Adams, Kiefer Adams, Keith Coker, Andrea Kiefer, Amy Kiefer, Will Fox (Mary Katherine), Russ Fox, Catrina Troja (Ben), Zach Rettman (Tiffany), Hannah Thornton (Colby), Madeline Rettman and Jack Rettman; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Laura Holt; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 17 at the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville, with burial in the Oakland Cemetery, Harrisonville.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the John D Kiefer, Jr., Memorial Fund. Make checks payable to Jean Marie Kiefer.
