Arthur Bryant “Art” Berry, Jr.
Dec. 9, 1926 – July 20, 2019
Arthur Bryant “Art” Berry, Jr., 92, Raymore, was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Arthur B. and Muriel V. (Lewis) Berry.
He died July 20 at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City, surrounded by love and family.
Art was a 1944 Argentine High School graduate. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
Aug. 1, 1947, Art was married to Norma L. Cabiness in Kansas City.
Art was employed as a fireman in Kansas City, Kansas, retiring as deputy chief in 1977 after 30 years of service.
He was past president of the Fireman’s Union Local No. 64; served on the Sunrise Beach Fire Board; was a life member of American Legion Post No. 1403 – Voiture 40 & 8, Sunrise Beach; a life member of VFW Post No. 3118, Pleasant Hill; a member of the DAV; and a member of the Longview Chapel Christian Church, Lee’s Summit.
Art was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Berry, Sr.; his mother, Muriel Berry-Doherty; a daughter, Judith Murray; and a sister, Lois Harding.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Norma, Raymore; a son, Michael (and Pamela) Berry, Kansas City, Kansas; a daughter, Karen S. Turner, Lee’s Summit; six grandchildren, Brian C. (and Cassandra) Berry of Kansas City, Kansas, Kevin (and Nicole) Turner of Peculiar, Kelly (and Steven) Shumway-Anderson of Lee’s Summit, Matthew (and Stephanie) Hopper of Greenwood, Angela (and Tony) Uredi of Lee’s Summit, and Brandon (and Tassie) Murray of Kansas City; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a half-brother, Bill Doherty of Blue Ridge, Georgia; a half-sister, Muriel B. Mellott of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were July 25 at the Longview Chapel Christian Church with the Rev. Donna Heim officiating. A final salute ceremony was rendered by Past Commander Ron Beatty and members of VFW Post No. 3118.
Graveside military services and interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the United States Navy and the VFW Post 3118 Honor Guard.
Casket bearers were Brian C. Berry, Brian M. Berry, Matthew Hopper, Brandon Murray, Kevin Turner and Korbin Turner. Honorary casket bearers were Sean Murray and Roy Reed.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Luke’s Hospice House, Longview Chapel Christian Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill.
Rose Maretta Buck
March 13, 1943 – July 19, 2019
Rose Maretta Buck, 76, Peculiar, died July 19 at her home.
A memorial gathering was held July 27 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Serenity Care Hospice.
Rose was born March 13, 1943, in Kansas, a daughter of Alex and Maretta Belle (Frisbie) Martino.
She was a 1961 graduate of Drexel High School and was a life-long Cass County resident.
She married William Don Buck in May 1962. Rose had worked for Bendix as an electronic assembler before retiring.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don, March 30, 2011; and a son, Tony Buck.
She is survived by a daughter, Tracy Hoover (Ron), Peculiar; a brother, Sonny Martino, Osceola; a sister, Joan Bodenhamer, Drexel; two grandchildren, Cole Hoover and Carly Hoover; and a great-grandson, Jack Hoover.

Barbara Jean Carter
May 23, 1935 – July 21, 2019
Barbara Jean Carter, Harrisonville, was born May 23, 1935, in Independence, the daughter of Daniel and Edith (Snider) Cook.
She died July 21 at her home in Harrisonville at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 28 days.
July 7, 1962, Barbara was married to Thomas “Tom” Marshall Carter, Jr., in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Barbara was a homemaker. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville, where she helped out in the Children’s Ministry and the United Methodist Women.
She was a past PTA president, member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, volunteered at the Thrift Store and was with the Cass Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Carter, Sept. 20, 2013.
Barbara is survived by her son, Phillip Carter and wife, Karen Ann, Harrisonville; a daughter, Susan Phillips and husband, Mike, Blue Springs; four grandchildren, Rachel Phillips and husband, Joe Miller, Samuel Phillips, Pamela Dye and Christina Spellman; a sister, Pat Morgan and husband, Ed, and a nephew, Dan Morgan and wife, Kris, all of St. Petersburg, Florida; other relatives and many friends.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was July 25 at the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Harrisonville.

Emma Louise “Lou” Chevreaux
Sept. 27, 1934 – July 19, 2019
Emma Louise “Lou” Chevreaux, 84, Peculiar, died July 19 at her home. Memorial services were July 26 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Harrisonville.
Lou was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Burlington, Vermont, the daughter of Col. Nathaniel H. and Ruth D. (Dudley) Colby.
She was a 1952 graduate of Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon.
Her father was in the Air Force thus providing Lou the opportunity to call many states her home. She met her first husband and father of her children, Joe Lane Cooper, of Kenna, New Mexico, when she lived in Roswell, New Mexico. Joe served his country in the United States Army and upon marrying in Roswell June 2, 1954, they were stationed in Germany, one of Lou’s fondest memories and favorite places.
Upon retiring from the Army, Ret. Maj. Joe L. Cooper and Lou moved to San Luis Obispo, California, where they remained married until Joe’s death in 1984.
Lou married Patrick F. Chevreaux July 7, 1984, in San Luis Obispo, California. Pat was a wonderful husband and together they built several homes, traveled, danced and enjoyed life.
They relocated to Missouri, Pat’s home state, in the fall of 1990, to live out their retirement years. Before retiring, Lou had worked in several medical offices as a valued medical secretary.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and was active in the Homeowner’s Association in Windmill Country Estates, Peculiar.
Lou loved getting together with her neighbors and friends, played Bunco and kept very active traveling with friends.
Lou was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Joe Lane Cooper and Patrick F. Chevreaux; and a sister, Anita Ruth Paige.
She is survived by three children, Patricia Finlay (Randall), Koloa, Hawaii, Michael Cooper (Julia), Peculiar, and Daniel Cooper, Templeton, California; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ted Colby (Mary), Florida.

Mary Ann Cumpton
Oct. 29, 1962 – July 20, 2019
Mary Ann Cumpton, 56, Mt. Vernon, formerly of Butler, died July 20 at her home. Funeral services were July 27 at the Adrian United Methodist Church in Adrian. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
Mary was born Oct. 29, 1962, the daughter of Dale and Lillian (Kelly) Smith of Pleasant Hill who preceded her in death.
Mary was a devoted wife and Christian.
She married the love of her life, Harvey Allen Cumpton, Sept. 10, 2005. Her other love was her faithful companion dog, Sparky.
Mary loved sharing her faith alongside her husband, by passing out wooden cross necklaces to all who would accept them. Mary never met a stranger, always wore a smile on her face and had a strong passion to sing. Her God-given voice was heard by many as she was a volunteer at Heartland Hospice in Butler. She also sang in several church programs.
Mary looked forward to her yearly trips to Branson for her wedding anniversary. She was a wonderful cook and always enjoyed eating fried chicken at Walnut Groves Lord Acres Sales.
Mary is survived by her husband, Harvey, of the home; son, Robert Bedford and wife, Erin, and granddaughter, Lilly, Pleasant Hill; a brother, Alan Smith; and a sister, Linda Johnson of Bates City.
Mary’s wishes are for everyone to keep singing for our Lord Jesus Christ and to love one another.

Cauline Marie Edmonson
Aug. 12, 1937 – July 21, 2019
Cauline Marie Edmonson, 81, Harrisonville, died July 21 at Redwood of Blue River in Kansas City. Memorial services were July 25 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Haven, Harrisonville.
Cauline was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Freeman, the daughter of Robert Glenn and Ruby Muriel (Rinker) Lacy.
She was a 1955 graduate of Freeman High School and received an associate’s degree from Rockhurst College in Kansas City.
Cauline had worked as the secretary to the principal at Cass-Midway Schools and was a branch manager at North American Savings Bank in Harrisonville for many years. She also worked as a transaction closer for Hight Land Title.
After retiring, Cauline moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, Iberia, where she lived before moving back to Harrisonville in 2016.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Freeman Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Eastern Star. She had also served as the mayor of Freeman.
A granddaughter, Skylar Swofford, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Edmonson; a brother, R.G. Lacy, Jr.; a sister, Charline Lacy; and a son-in-law, Pat Thomas.
Cauline is survived by a son, Curtis Koons, Kansas City; two daughters, Cara Swofford and her husband Steve, Lake of the Ozarks, and Trudy Thomas, Drexel; a sister, Carol Gillogly, Drexel; 11 grandchildren, Jillian Marks and her husband, Jeremy, Christopher Thomas and his wife, Rhianna, Nicholas (Wick) Thomas, Caitlin Thomas, Kyle Swofford, Drew Swofford, Gage Swofford, Charles Koons, Malia Blosser and her husband, David, Bethany Salmons and Robert Hehn; five great-grandchildren, Gracie Marks, Allie Marks, Walden Thomas, Melva Rose Thomas and Autumn Blosser.

JoAnn Frances Gerant
1943 – July 25, 2019
JoAnn Frances Gerant, 76, Peculiar, died July 25 surrounded by love and family at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville.
She was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Jennie (Lipasek) Fontaine.
At the age of 18, she married her high school sweetheart, Michael Joe Gerant, and their adventure began. JoAnn was not just a homemaker for her family, she was the heart of it. Family was always first and foremost for her. She was always so proud of her son and her daughter was her best friend. She never missed a single school function, sports event or dance recital for her granddaughters, even if it meant driving for hours or flying in from another state.
Everyone was always welcome in her home and no one left with an empty stomach. She was always so full of love, but was also known to put up a fight for her loved ones. She had a beautiful life and her light will be missed by so many.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Mike Gerant, of the home; a son, Michael Gerant, Jr., and wife, Sheila, Peculiar; a daughter, Jennie Gonzalez and husband, Alfredo, Raymore; five granddaughters, JoAnna, Rebecca, Jacqueline, Kaitlyn and Jessica; her mother, Jennie Fontaine, Harrisonville; other relatives and many friends.
Cremation. A celebration of life service will be at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 2 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville. with inurnment in the Peculiar Cemetery, Peculiar, following the service.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Aug. 2 at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or to Kansas City Hospice.

Myrna McCarthy
Aug. 8, 1936 – July 25, 2019
Myrna Reynolds McCarthy, East Lynne, was born Aug. 8, 1936, in Urich, the daughter of Wilbur and Dorothy (Yates) Reynolds.
She died July 25 at her home, surrounded by family at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 17 days.
Myrna was employed at Western Electric in Lee’s Summit for 30 years. She was co-founder of Big Creek Southern Railroad in Pleasant Hill.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Reynolds.
Myrna is survived by her son, Roger Richter, East Lynne; a granddaughter, Sylvia Richter; two great-grandchildren, Catarina and Donovan Richter; other relatives and friends.
Cremation. No services are scheduled at this time.

Francis John Pace, III
Jan. 30, 1947 – July 24, 2019
Francis John Pace, III, Harrisonville, was born Jan. 30, 1947, in Kansas City, the son of Francis John Pace, Jr., and Edith Avalee (Blunt) Pace.
He died July 24 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 24 days.
Nov. 30, 1984, John was married to Karen Lou Young in Harrisonville. John was employed as a carpenter for New Castle Homes in Harrisonville. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Harrisonville.
John was an awesome, reliable man and helped anyone he could. He was very generous and was the glue that held the family together. John was the best grandpa you could ever have.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his wife, Karen Pace, of the home; a son, John Pace and wife DeAnna, Cypress, Texas; three daughters, Tara Paxton, Cypress, Texas, Pam Utterback and husband Jeff, Lake Arrowhead, California, and Tina Leone and husband, Paul, Harrisonville; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Pace, Raymore, and Ken Pace, Lee’s Summit; two sisters, Terree Brees and husband, Dan, Seward, Nebraska, and Evelyn Dunkin and husband Greg, Spring Grove, Illinois; other relatives and many friends.

Edward Pajer
May 24, 1936 – July 26, 2019
Edward “Ed” Pajer, Kansas City, Kansas, was born May 24, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Joseph J. and Edna (Fisher) Pajer. He died July 26 at his home surrounded by love and family at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 2 days.
Dec. 24, 1988, Ed married to Judy A. (Woolery) Fairbanks in Harrisonville.
Ed was employed 38 years as a receiving manager for the Sears Metcalf Store, Overland Park, Kansas, until his retirement in 1996. Later, he was employed for 15 years at O’Reilly Auto Parts to keep himself busy until his full retirement in 2016.
He was an Army veteran serving as a M.P. After retirement he became known as 10-cent Eddie at the local casinos where he played the slot machines.
Ed always had a special place in his heart for his four-legged companions and was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark Pajer, Dec. 21, 2014; a grandson, Tristin Fairbanks.
Ed is survived by his wife, Judy Pajer, of the home; a daughter, Sheryl Keller (Bill), Stilwell, Kansas; a stepson, C.J. Fairbanks (Mandy), Peculiar; two stepdaughters, Stephanie McGirl (Gene), Warrensburg, and Pamela Ferguson (Cory), Harrisonville; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Max, Ashley, Ariel, Griffin, Lorelei and Daniel; six great-grandchildren, Emery, Emmett, Jasper, Mia, Savannah and Will; a brother, Joseph Pajer, Gladstone; a sister, Nancy Lappi, Santa Fe, New Mexico; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were July 29 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, with cremation following. Inurnment will be in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, and will be held at a later date.

Kathy Lou Rains

Kathy Lou Rains, 68, Harrisonville, died July 26 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville.
Kathy is survived by her son, Dewayne Rains and his wife, Barbara, Anacoco, Louisiana; a stepson, Jeff Rains, Fordyce, Arkansas; a daughter, Madie Probasco and her husband, Brent, Harrisonville; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Local arrangements are under the care of Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Funeral services will be at the Lebby Memorial Funeral Home, Leesville, Louisiana, at a later date.
Jo Ann Shideler
Sept. 30, 1934 – July 25, 2019
Jo Ann Shideler, 84, Drexel, died July 25 at Promise Healthcare, Overland Park, Kansas.
Ernie Jo Ann Shideler was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Wynona, the daughter of Ernest and Mary Entenmann Smith. She grew up in Hardin and graduated from Hardin High School in 1952. She then continued her education at the Trinity Lutheran Nursing School, graduating in 1955.
Feb. 28, 1964, Jo Ann was married to Larry Shideler at the Drexel United Methodist Church.
Throughout Jo Ann’s life, she would work in many health care facilities as a registered nurse. She worked for Children’s Mercy Hospital, Whitman Air Force Base, Cass Regional Medical Center and Susan B. Allen Hospital in El Dorado, Kansas,
She was a school nurse at one time in Eureka, Kansas, a public health nurse in Arkansas City, Kansas, the VA Hospital in Kansas City and after working 12 years at the VA Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, she would retire in 1994.
Jo Ann loved to travel, especially in the motor home. She also enjoyed her time and friends that she met while wintering in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Family was important to Jo Ann and she adored her grandchildren.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, J.W. Freeman; grandson, Michael Rogers; uncle Tom Hilton; aunt Juanita Hilton; and cousin, Sherry Simpson.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years Larry Shideler, Drexel; daughter, Cynthia Kline and husband, William, Aurora; son, Michael Keith Rogers and wife, Linda, Raytown; grandchildren, Alan Scott Fawbush, Donald Fawbush, James Rogers, Michelle Wilson and Tina Ford. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and by her sister, Rita Reynolds and husband, Roger, Norbourne; brother, John Freeman and wife, Judith Ann, Butler; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family members and dear friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 2 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel. A visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 at the chapel in Drexel. Burial will follow services in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
